This polychrome tan calf is a Patent Stereographic Binding, registered by William McAdam and created by Anthony L. Harrison in this same year. It features colored stampings by inked wooden blocks, producing the appearance of leather onlays. It is quite imaginative, contrasting favorably with the average commercial binding of the era.“The Rainbow” (1847) is an example of the most outrageous scheme for retreading a worn out gift book, executed by the publisher A.L. Harrison of Albany NY. This seems to be the only book Harrison published, but it is, in fact, a beautiful effort. Spectacular binding of brilliant bone white calf (nearly always aged to a beige/light brown hue), stenciled in terra cotta, green, and two distinct shades of brown, and elaborately gilt. Harrison called this style of binding a “Patent stereographic binding” but there is no record of the binding being patented by Harrison or anyone else. As with all gift books, it appeared late in the year for the holiday season, and the book is “for” 1847, but the preface is dated 1846. The spine of the binding, the vignette title, and the title-page itself are all appropriately dated 1847. But the book was a flop, and the publisher unloaded his unsold copies the following year by carefully pasting a tiny round label over the spine dated 1848, and he used a similar paste-over cancel to change the date of the vignette title page from 1847 to 1848. He then hand-stamped an added “I” to the Roman numeral date in the title page, and erased the date in the preface and overstepped a “7” where the “6” had been. At first place, this might have looked like an entirely new edition. “The Rainbow” is the most over-wrought example of a gift book trying to look like a gift annual. Also, Harrison may have been the only publisher to arrange his contents page by states, showing where each of his contributors lived, formatting his volume as a kind of anthology of regional literature. Nineteen states are listed. Binding presents very well & includes an extremely interesting history.
